In 2018 she was able to assume the role of cocaptain for the U.S. team. Rapinoe had the chance to score two goals as United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze-medal game at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been prevented from attending their participation in the Olympics until 2021 due the COVID-19 Pandemic.
